    Underground vs. Overhead: More Than a Cost Debate

    For too long, the underground vs. overhead debate has been framed as purely a cost issue. Cost matters but it’s only one piece of what “public interest” really means.

    Underground transmission can deliver:
    Greater reliability and storm resilience
    Reduced long-term vegetation management and maintenance conflicts
    Improved aesthetics and property value protection
    Stronger alignment with economic development goals
    Greater community support of critical grid upgrades

    Energy demand is rising. We need to grow our infrastructure. The question isn’t whether we build, it’s how we build in a way that balances reliability, affordability, and community impact.

    Underground transmission won’t be the right answer everywhere. In the right locations especially where communities are willing to invest alongside utilities, it can be the right long-term choice. That’s smart infrastructure.
